There’s a lot of music to experience this week. I have included Monday and Tuesday nights since I got this out early in the week somehow. Even Sunday night with the Oscars.

okay – I have added a couple items in – hopefully I won’t discover more….

Mon. 2/22

Top Show(s): Soul singer Judith Hill had something of a breakout year in 2015. The LA native will be at the Grammy Museum for an evening of songs and conversation. KSCN has Bonnie Raitt headlining their benefit concert at the Valley Performing Arts Center. Maia Sharp will be opening the show. Wynonna Judd will be making some “Big Noise” at the El Rey when she showcases her first album of new material in over a decade.

Tues. 2/23

Top Show: John Moreland had one of my favorite albums of 2015, High On Tulsa Heat. The Tulsa troubadour  will be headlining the Troubadour. Lily Hiatt, who caught folks’ attention last year with her Royal Blue CD, opens the night.

Sugarland‘s Jennifer Nettles is out on a solo tour; she’ll be performing at the Wiltern. Veteran troubadour Shawn Mullins has a gig at the Hotel Café. Miranda Lee Richards has an Amoeba in-store performance while local blues-rocker Tarra Layne has a free show at the Mint.

Aoife O’Donovan

Top Show(s): The Grammy Museum welcomes one of Rock’s originals, Dion, who has a terrific new album New York Is My Home, to share. Aoife O’Donovan, the enchanting singer who used to front Crooked Still, headlines Largo, with Robert Sarazin Blake opening. Check out her latest In The Magic Hour – it is magical indeed.

Road warriors Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors visit the Troubadour tonight with Jamie N Commons as their supporting act. The DoseIndio Downey (vocals, guitar) and Ralph Alexander (drums, bass) – will rock up the Hotel Café on their first of three straight Wednesdays there.

Thur. 2/25

Top Show(s): There is a cool bill at El Cid with Latin Grammy winner El Twanguero laying down some Latino surf/twang along with Zander Schloss (The Weirdos, Circle Jerks and many soundtracks) and Willy Tea Taylor. The Troubadour also boasts a terrific bill, presented by the Bluegrass Situation, featuring Nikki Bluhm, Della Mae and headliners The Infamous Stringdusters. More expert picking can be found at the Skirball where the fabulous Bill Frisell performs selections from his latest When You Wish Upon A Star; his unique take on some classic film and TV music. Petra Haden, Eyvind Kang, Thomas Morgan and Kenny Wollesen will be playing with him. Power Pop legend Emitt Rhodes has a sold-out appearance at the Grammy Museum but seek out his new album Rainbow’s End, his first since 1973.

Ellen Kempner of Palehound.

Ellen Kempner, who goes by the band-name Palehound, is a very interesting young performer with a raw, confessional indie rock sound; you can find her at the Echo.

Run River North celebrate their soon-to-be-released sophomore album Drinking From A Salt Pond with a free Amoeba show. The L.A. country/pop trio Fairground Saints will open for Carly Rae Jepsen at the Fonda tonight and the Grove in Anaheim tomorrow night. The Coffee Gallery Backstage hosts a night of music from Annette Conlon, Rich McCulley and Iain Wiegert, plus storyteller Dylan Brody.

Fri. 2/26

Top Show(s): Dwight Twilley also is a name well known to Power Pop fans, most notably for the classic tune “I’m On Fire.” He’ll be at McCabe’s with the Americana soul duo Jorgensen Tagg. Julien Baker really grabbed my attention with her powerful, personal music. Her album Sprained Ankle picked up a bunch of accolades last year and tonight she’ll be playing at Eagle Rock’s Center for the Arts. Here’s a video of her song “Something.”

Bill Callahan makes what has become an all-too-rare appearance in L.A. He has two shows tonight at Hollywood’s Masonic Lodge, and word is that he is working on a new album for Drag City.  Lake Street Drive has a new album, Side Pony, and a show at the Wiltern. Metric comes down from Canada to share their current album Pagans In Vegas at the Palladium tonight and Anaheim’s House of Blues on 2/28.

Theater Raymond Kabbaz hosts two talented instrumentalists: guitarist John Scofield and sax-man Joe Lovano for a rare show together, while it’s Jon Brion night again at Largo. Alina Bea (aka Alina Cutrono) has a CD release show at Resident for her new live EP. Roots Music Night at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach features local bluesman Jake La Botz. Patrolled By Radar will appear at the Cinema Bar with The Middle of Nowhere and Redwood Stills and the Satellite’s triple bill holds the Papercuts, Advance Base and Bouquet.

Sat. 2/27

The O’s

Top Show(s): The O’s are a rootsy rock band from Dallas that impressed with the new album Honeycomb, which reminded me a bit of the twangier version of the ‘80s band Del Amitri (which is a compliment). They play the Hotel Café with the Dirty River Boys. The rascally, rough ‘n’ tumble garage rockers Parquet Courts reign at Highland Park’s American Legion Hall tonight and tomorrow.

Two oldies but goodies who have a soft spot in my musical heart have local shows tonight. Folk icon Judy Collins will be at the Saban Theater with Ari Heist opening. I quite enjoyed her MacArthur Park show this summer. Three Dog Night, which now is led just by Danny Hutton, will be at the Rose in Pasadena.

The Bootleg will be home to the Cave Singers; the Seattle-based alt-folk outfit just released a new disc, Banshee. Nashville star Kip Moore headlines Anaheim’s House of Blues with the Cadillac Three in tow. The accomplished singer/songwriter David Wilcox plays McCabe’s while the Cerritos Center has one of the oddest bills (for me, at least) tonight with the lite-rockers Little River Band paired with Stray Cats’ Lee Rocker.

Sun. 2/28

Martha-Wainwright

The Wainwright Sisters

Top Show: The Wainwright Sisters – Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche – released an excellent album last year, Songs in the Dark (their first together), that was filled with wonderfully eclectic mix of covers (Irving Berlin to Richard Thompson). They’ll be playing at McCabe’s.

There will be bluegrass by the Pacific when Nu-Blu performs at Rusty’s Surf Ranch with Mahavi Soul. Maura Kennedy has an afternoon matinee at the Coffee Gallery Backstage with B.D. Love to perform songs from their duo album.

Mon. 2/29

Top Show: Brian Whelan, formerly of Brokedown and a recent Dwight Yoakam sideman, celebrates his compelling solo outing Sugarland at the Bootleg with Troup and Marjorie Fair also on the bill. Another impressive local Americana outfit Bird Dog is part of the School Night at Bardot lineup.
